Our country began as a nation of immigrants. Our current immigration policy should and does encourage highly educated, hard working individuals to come to America and contribute to a better world. However, our porous border has allowed millions of individuals to enter this country illegally jeopardizing our security and burdening our resources. We must secure our borders, and I support using the military to assist in this effort. I do not support amnesty or any path to citizenship for those who have entered America illegally. However, it is unrealistic and cost prohibitive to believe we can apprehend and deport all undocumented immigrants. Once our borders are secure I do support a program to allow illegal immigrants to come forward, pay a significant criminal fine, and then be granted a work permit. These immigrants would never be enfranchised as citizens or be given the right to vote. They would pay their fair share of taxes.
